REFLECTION:1 Samuel 17:32-51 “David and Goliath”
Most people today have heard the story of David and Goliath. It has become symbolic of any battle between the little guy and the giant corporation or oversized enemy. It has become a little bit like one of Aesop’s fables, like the tortoise and the hare. But what is it really about? It is about David’s zeal for the glory of God. It is about God giving David all he needed to overcome a giant obstacle. It is about how we can overcome paralysing fear and overwhelming odds through faith in God.
Here is an outline:
1. Faith in God casts out all Fear
a. Let no one’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight (32)
b. The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion will save me (37)
2. The Weapons needed for the battle are not swords and shields:
a. Human armour will not protect, only the armour of God will save us (39)
b. I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts… whom you have defied (45)
c. That you may know that the Lord does not save by sword and spear (47)
3. The Victory over giants comes from God
a. He is victorious in battle (47)
b. He chooses the weak to shame the strong (Am I a dog?)
c. God gives us victory over our own Giants when we trust in him.
To think about:
What is the Goliath, the giant fear that paralyses me at the moment? How can I have victory over it?
