REFLECTION: Matthew 28:1-10 “Earth Shaking News”
Every once in a while, something happens that is truly newsworthy and
impacts the lives of everyone. At the moment, it would be the War in Iran
and the ensuing fuel crisis that has prices rising at an alarming rate.
The greatest news ever announced happened at the first Easter with the
resurrection of Jesus. It is impossible to exaggerate just how important
Jesus’ resurrection was and is. His resurrection signals the end of the
chokehold that death and sin has over humanity. His resurrection means that
we can be restored to a loving relationship with God and live with the
certain hope of eternal life.
This event was so important that God heralded his resurrection with
earthquakes, angelic visitors, miracles and of course, appearances from the
risen Lord Jesus. This news should change the very direction of our lives.
Jesus’ resurrection changes everything! Here is an outline of the message for
this Easter Sunday.
1. Earth Shaking News:
a. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake (2)
b. An angel of the Lord descended from heaven (2-3)
c. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men (4)
2. A message that seemed too good to be true:
a. The angel said “Do not be afraid” (5)
b. Jesus ... is not here; for he has been raised, as he said (6)
c. Come, see the place where he lay.
3. Death has been defeated:
a. Then go quickly and tell his disciples (7)
b. So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy (8)
c. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings” (9)
d. They ... took hold of his feet, and worshiped him (9-10)
What about you?
What impact does the resurrection of Jesus have on your life today?
Are you a witness today of the risen Christ to those around you?

Hymns:
TIS 370 Christ the Lord is risen today

TIS 376 I know that my redeemer lives
TIS 380 Yours be the glory
